FAREWELL FR. RICK
Fr. Rick Walsh is moving to an exciting new chapter in his priesthood as pastor of St. Peter’s Church in Toronto. We will wish him well at a reception after the 10 a.m. Mass on July 14. Please plan to join us to offer your farewells and blessings.

HELLO FR. TIM
Fr. Tim Sullivan will be the new Associate Director. Fr. Tim is from Norwood, MA and joined the Paulist Fathers from the Paulist Center when he worked at the State House. His last assignment was as Pastor of St. Patrick’s Church in Memphis, TN. At the same time he also served as the Director of Catholic Charities for the Diocese of Memphis.

THE WINNERS OF THE PASTORAL COUNCIL
The following have won a two year term on the Pastoral Council: Bob Bordone, Emily Hankle, Elianna Nuzum, and Jennifer Sullivan Sulewski.

CINEMA WITH SPIRIT
Save the date of Thurs., June 20. Paulist Student Stuart Wilson-Smith will be leading the discussion about Omagh, a feature film shot in Ireland about a father’s search for justice after losing his son in the IRA Omagh bombing. “What do you do when justice doesn’t come?” Stu lived in Ireland when this film was shown in 2004 and says it fits our category of “best films you’ve never seen.” We gather at 7pm on the 3rd floor for the film and brief discussion after.

THE ST. JOSEPH’S SOCIETY NEEDS YOUR HELP!
The newly instituted St. Joseph’s Society hopes to finish the remodel of the Crossroads Family Shelter bathroom they started last year in conjunction with the senior high service project. They did a fine job renovating the bathroom but in doing the project they found the floor was rotted around the bathtub. They intend to go back and replace the floor, bathtub and other fixtures. They will donate the labor and are asking for donations to pay for the materials. They need around $3,500 to finish the job. Please help them help the Crossroads Family Shelter, a way station for homeless families who are getting into their own homes. You can make the check out to the Paulist Center and mark it for “St. Joseph’s Society.”

The selection committee meets in the fall but now is the time for you to start thinking of who you might want to nominate. Since 1974 the Paulist Center Community has presented the Isaac Hecker Award for Social Justice to an outstanding North American Catholic. Recipients of the award have included locally and nationally recognized women and men -- lay people, sisters, priests, and bishops. Some have been involved in direct service to those in need, others in advocacy work and the transformation of structures and institutions.

DIRECTOR’S REFLECTION

One of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee’s house and took his place at the table. And a woman in the city, who was a
sinner, having learned that he was eating in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster jar of ointment.
Luke 7:36-37

ANOINTING IN BETHANY
Jesus got invited to dinner
in a swell part of town.
The politico wanted him there as a curio,
someone to raise his social capital,
or, perhaps, just someone to embarrass
for his guests’ amusement.
He didn’t realize Jesus was not domesticated,
until the streetwalker crashed the party.
She dove into the room full of men
like a eel into a fish tank,
no burka, hair unbound.
Beautiful and, she did a beautiful thing,
that’s what Jesus said.

One man muttered to himself,
another was looking around for the bouncers.
The murmur went up, “Who let her in?”
Mr. Big, is thinking,
“What was I thinking inviting this guy?”

Red faced the host blurted out,
“Jesus, don’t you know what sort of woman…?”

“Do you know what sort of man you are?” Jesus replies.
“You didn’t take my coat, she’s slipped off my sandals.
You didn’t shake my hand, she hasn’t stopped kissing
my feet.
You didn’t offer me a drink, she has me well oiled.”
Jesus proceeds with a pull-no-punches parable,
and the punch line is, “you’re busted.”

This soirée turns into
Jesus’ riff on downward mobility;
social climbers can’t get to heaven,
only those who pour out love;
and it is this odd economics,
the commonweal of love,
that got Jesus whacked.

DIRECTOR’S REFLECTION
The Widow

A man who had died was being carried out, the only son
of his mother, and she was a widow. Luke 7:12

W alking up from subway everyday
there she was in her low webbed chair
“I need your generosity”
sing song chant
in a voice tinged by the Caribbean
here in frozen Boston.

Wrapped in enough clothes to double her size
a homemade turban above her lined black face.
The first time I dropped a dollar
in her empty soda cup
I asked, “How’s it going?”
“Noooooo comment.”

I continued to drop coins
in her Burger King cup
and greet her by name.
Eventually she started to smile
when she saw it was me.

One day, as spring joined us,
she wore no less layers.
I stopped, wanted to ask
how she got that way.

She looked up at me, then away.
I dropped the dollar in her cup.
I wondered if she had a husband
who left her or a son who died.

She gestured for me to move on
I was in the way of the passersby.
I joined the body of the crowd
born away from her.
