The Paulist Center Boston
News

This year, the Worship Committee is sponsoring a Novena to the Holy Spirit from Friday, May 10 to Saturday, May 18.  A Novena to the Holy Spirit is held annually from the Friday after Ascension Thursday to the Pentecost Vigil.  It marks the time of prayer by the disciples after Jesus ascended until the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.  This is a time of prayer for us as individuals and for us as a church community.   See the bulletin insert here.

A summary of the results of the Stewardship Survey is available here.  More detailed results will be posted when available.  Thanks to all who filled out a response!

The Vatican’s Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) has issued a statement critical of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, (LCWR) framed around a doctrinal assessment conducted by the CDF. The Conference represents more than 80 % of the 57,000 women religious in the United States. The leadership of the LCWR is “stunned” by the conclusions reached in the statement by the CDF.

The Paulist Center community emphatically offers support, encouragement and respect for the women religious and various congregations of the LCWR for leading in faith by example, sacrifice and service. The history of love and service by women religious in this nation is a model of what it means to live the Gospel in words and actions. Throughout the crisis in the Church occasioned by recent scandal,  women religious have calmly, intelligently and courageously maintained an unmatched commitment to the poor and a zealous appreciation for dialogue and discussion. The Paulist Center community applauds the consistent commitment to human dignity framed by Gospel values so evident in those religious communities that belong to the LCWR. The community stands with women religious in solidarity and admiration, confident Spirit-led leadership will continue to shine forth from the LCWR.

Travel To El Salvador

Go on pilgrimage to El Salvador with Fr. Frank Desiderio, CSP and members of the Sister Community. The trip is planned for March 19-26, 2012. This allows us to be there on the anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero. The delegation will work with the Share Organization to learn about El Salvador’s history. The trip will include a visit to Archbishop Romero’s home, The Rose Garden at the UCA dedicated to the memory of the Jesuit martyrs and our Sister Community Hacienda Vieja. Building relationships is as important as building houses as we share in the joys and the struggles of life in El Salvador. Info: Joe Miller at jrmiller105@gmail.com or 651-212-1709.
A Film by Tom Gibbons, CSP.

This half-hour documentary about the founder of the Paulist Fathers traces Isaac Hecker’s early beginnings in lower Manhattan and follows him as he encounters some of the brightest literary minds of the 19th Century, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau. Along the way, Isaac discerns that the meaning of his life lay in one of the unlikeliest of places in Antibellum America... the Catholic Church.

Filmed on location in New York City, Boston, and Concord, Massachusetts, Isaac Hecker tells a story that is both uniquely Catholic and uniquely America.

20112016 Pastoral Plan Annual Report
First Year Implementation

A summary of pastoral work and planning by the staff and ministries of the Center, in response to the Pastoral Plan adopted one year ago. To see the summary, please click HERE.

"What kind of society do we wish to become?" It is vital that all of us engage this question by bringing our values - not our opinions - to the many conversations about the economy and the federal budget. The budget is a moral document! The Gospel and Catholic social teaching remind us that we are responsible for both ourselves and the common good. One of the ways in which we do this is through government, taxes and the federal budget. To the extent there are things we don't like about any one of the three, we together are responsible for fixing them. Being informed about and engaged with these issues is part of our responsibility as citizens and as people of faith. Please come for thoughtful dialogue, not debate, about both the role of government and how to pay for it. Co-hosted by St. Anthony Shrine. Eight Tuesdays, 5:30 to 7:30 pm, Feb. 14 & 28 (PC), Mar 13 & 27 (SAS), Apr 10 & 24 (PC), May 8 & 22 (SAS). Cost: $25 for books plus $5 per session. To register: Susan Rutkowski, 617-948-2426 or susanrutkow@aol.com.

Frank Desiderio and Bob Bowers will present a workshop on letting go of hurt, anger or resentments and becoming open to forgiveness and healing. Saturday, October 29, 2011, from 12:30 to 4:30 (the regular 5 PM Mass is available at the Center). for more info click Reconciliation.

Muslims and Catholics: A Shared Engagement with 21st Century America?

Presented by Sandra Toenies Keating, Ph.D.

We American Catholics are relatively ignorant of Islam: its history, doctrine and

practices. Moreover, we know little of the relations between Christians and Muslims that have spanned fourteen centuries and undergone significant changes since Vatican II.  Dr. Keating will explore some of the central points of agreement and conflict between these two religious communities with an emphasis on important developments since the events of 9/11. “We don’t need to spike the football.” “We don’t need to dance on his grave.” “Osama bin Laden is not a trophy.” These are all things I’ve read this week that reflect the belief of Jews, Christians, Muslims and others that God is a God of justice and mercy. Osama bin Laden killed innocent human beings, both Muslims and Christians. He directed mass murder and fomented hatred around the world. He used religious extremism for demonic purposes. In justice he should be stopped but mercy tempers justice.

We can be relieved that someone who taught hate, used terror and called murder a virtue is no longer among the living. We also remember, in this Easter season, we have a Teacher who modeled, “love your enemies, pray for your persecutors.” We love our enemy by praying for them. When we do this we keep relationships in their right order. We acknowledge that God is the one who is ultimately responsible to judge each individual and we maintain our own humanity by not stripping away the humanity of our enemy. ~ Fr. Frank
